Volunteering for the Shelter

The Shelter thrives because of our caring volunteers and we value their gifts, talents, and time. Without committed volunteers the Shelter could not provide high quality, cost-effective services to the many children of our community who require emergency shelter. We believe that for everyone who has a genuine interest in helping, there is a need waiting to be met. Please give prayerful consideration to the ways in which you might assist the Shelter to continue its tradition of service.

There are many opportunities for those who are interested in becoming a volunteer. The following list is not inclusive and you may suggest additional ideas. Together we can negotiate and tailor a way for you to use your time and talents to make a difference in the lives of the children.

  • We are always delighted to have groups or individuals bring or cook a meal.
  • During the school year we welcome homework helpers in the afternoon.
  • Yard work, storage closet organization, and other labor intensive activities are also appreciated.
  • Perhaps your skills are better suited to fundraising efforts. We are thrilled to have individuals and organizations sponsor us as their community involvement project. Fundraising events may collect monetary or in-kind (see donations page for more detail) contributions.

Why Volunteer?

People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, especially wanting to help others. But it’s also OK to want to receive some benefits from volunteering. Some people are uncomfortable with the notion that a volunteer “benefits” from doing volunteer work. There is a long tradition of seeing volunteering as a form of charity, based on altruism and selflessness. The best volunteering does involve the desire to serve others, but this does not exclude other motivations, as well.

Consider that most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. So today you may be the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else’s volunteer effort.

Becoming a Volunteer

Volunteer applicants must be 18 years or older and complete an application package that includes background check authorizations. Applicants must provide a negative (TB) tuberculosis test result and a copy of a valid driver’s license and car insurance card.

An interview with both the Executive Director and the Houseparent will be scheduled and at that time your skills and the Shelter’s needs will be matched to ensure maximum rewards for all concerned, especially the children.

Upon completion of the background check process you will be contacted and scheduled to begin your volunteer activities.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Shelter, please call us at 359-8595 or email info@nkp4kids.org. We’d love to hear from you!
